SJ Norman is an anti-disciplinary artist, author, curator and cultural organizer. His career has spanned two decades and many forms. His most recent major exhibitions include the 4th National Indigenous Triennial at the National Gallery of Australia and the 22nd Biennale of Sydney. Honours for his performance and visual art work include the 67th Blake Prize, a Sidney Myer Fellowship and an Australia Council Fellowship. He is the author of one book (Permafrost, 2021, UQP) and a significant body of other writings. His award wins and shortlistings for major literary prizes include the Peter Blazey Prize for Non-Fiction, The Kill Your Darlings Prize, the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards, the Stella Prize, The Elizabeth Jolley Prize for Short Story and the Judith Wright Prize for Poetry. He is the co-curator of Knowledge of Wounds, an autonomous Indigenous art, knowledge-exchange and radical pedagogical project, with Joseph M. Pierce (Cherokee Nation Citizen).
He is a queer trans man and a south-eastern Koori, connected through his mother’s lineage the Wiradjuri and Ngyiampaa-Wailawan nations, and to West Yorkshire through his father’s. Born and raised on Gadigal Country in the city also known as Sydney, Australia, he has lived and worked between Australia, Europe and the continent known to many Native peoples as Turtle Island since 2006. He is currently based between Gadigal Country/Sydney and Lenapehoking/New York City.
