Cande worked with grayDUCK Gallery to realize the work shared here in Fusebox’s The It’s NOT Fair.
Title: barrioPOP, Between Mars & Earth
Medium: multimedia installation
Description of the project: As part of The It’s NOT Fair, artist Cande Aguilar’s work depicts a back alley teleported aboard an alien craft, graffiti and all. Other works presented within, such as video and sculptural assemblages, use the language of abstracted figuration to represent nostalgia and universal possibilities as well as earthly realities.
Bio: Cande Aguilar is a mid-career contemporary visual artist, who was born and brought up in the United States, like other well-known artists such as Maysey Craddock, Bernard Kirschenbaum, Walter Price, Robert Sagerman, and Deb Achak. Cande Aguilar was born in 1972, a self-taught artist who reflects on border culture through his barrioPOP distinctive style. At the young age of 10, Cande embarked on a music career, and at the age of 13 recorded his first Conjunto/Tejano music album. As a musician, he toured the United States and received numerous awards. Life on the road allowed Aguilar to mature and gain inspiration from diverse cultures. In 1999 he produced his first oil painting, and has since accumulated an impressive body of work. Cande defines his barrioPOP style as an amalgamation sprung by characters, colors and street phenomena.
