“Blurring the boundaries between Art and Rock, Maxi Geil! and Playcolt have been setting their native Brooklyn's live circuit alight with a heady mix of glam styling and funky riffs.” --ArtRabbit
The music of Maxi Geil! and PlayColt embodies the thrill of a bygone New York City. It captures its electric seediness and sexuality, its elegance and its shabbiness. Born a generation too late for the late 70’s New Wave and the 80’s East Village art scene, NYC native Guy Richards Smit captures and breathes out his modern day vision, badly out of control and dancing in the streets. The resulting songs combine a searing critique of American culture's dumbed down pop coupled with a clever appraisal of great American songbook writers Irving Berlin and Cole Porter. The key to Smit's contribution is his understanding of the great lyricists Jacques Brel, Mark E. Smith, Nick Cave, Scott Walker, the Pet Shop Boys and Ray Davies as well as a love for a great melody and infectious rhythms.
Maxi Geil! and PlayColt is presented in Austin by testperformancetest in conjunction with Arthouse and Fusebox Festival. This is a free event.
