Magda Sayeg/Knitta Please |
Magda Sayeg |
Sayeg specializes in transforming exterior city spaces and objects – parking meters, bike racks, and lampposts, for example – into unexpected works of art. Her medium is knitting, which she does by hand or with a loom, depending on the size of the project.

Sayeg works to redefine knitting, an art form that’s all too often relegated to craft and associated with scarves and winter sweaters.

Commissioned by Art Alliance Austin for Art Week Austin 2010, Sayeg will cover parts of downtown Austin with brilliant swaths of knitted, repurposed material.
|

New Works Project: Luke Savisky |
Luke Savisky @ AMOA |

Luke Savisky, who works in both traditional and non-traditional art spaces, creates multi-media installations that transform natural and architectural settings. Exploring the spectrum of the human experience through film and art, he stretches the limits of visual media using found film montage, direct projection techniques, kinetic sets and sculptures, and unusual projection surfaces in unlikely environments. Using vintage film equipment in concert with contemporary digital technology, his installations suggest transition, transmutation, decay, and renewal using oblique montage and abstract light-sculpting techniques.

For his New Works project, Austin-based artist Luke Savisky will transform a gallery at the Museum into a mesmerizing immersive environment of light and image.

MAP
|

T is For: Two hundred two-steppers on the steps of the Texas Capitol |
Allison Orr & Graham Reynolds |

Celebrated local choreographer Allison Orr teams up with award-winning Austin-based composer Graham Reynolds to kick-off the 2010 Fusebox Festival on the steps of the state capitol. T is for... will celebrate the two-step's rich cultural history while showcasing local dancers who love and live for the two-step. Strategically situated overlooking downtown on the capitol steps, the thirty-minute performance will feature a legion of local two-steppers. The number of performers will gradually increase over the course of the performance, culminating with a final "All-Step" where audience members will be invited to two-step as well.
Presented by testperformancetest and Arthouse.

Dancer Kaiji Moriyama of Japan is considered one of the most acclaimed contemporary dancers in Japan and this trip will be his second trip to the U.S. and the American debut of this new piece, The Velvet Suite, which was created to fit the theme of the 2007 Dance Venice Biennale: “Body and Eros.” Moriyama’s movement and presence is magnetic in The Velvet Suite, and he will be joined on stage by violinist Koichiro Muroya. Moriyama made his U.S. solo debut in 2005 with a stunning piece, “katana” (sword), the New York Times called “a dance of amazing concentration by an amazing dancer”.

This marks the second year of testpeformancetest, an endowment created to bring national and international performers to the Austin area spearheaded by Julie Thornton. Slurb |
Marina Zurkow |

Slurb, 2009, single channel video, duration: 17'42" loop, color, animation and stereo sound, music by Lem Jay Ignacio & additional animation: Jen Kelly

Marina Zurkow makes psychological narratives about humans and their relationship to animals, plants and the weather. The animated, carnivalesque tailgate party of Slurb loops and stutters like a vinyl record stuck in a groove. Slurb - a word that collapses "slum" and "suburb" - encapsulates a dreamy ode to the rise of slime, a watery future in which jellyfish have dominion.

There is a history of satirical illustration, epitomized by J.J.Grandville in the 19th century, in which animal-headed humans are deployed in the telling of troubling social narratives. Slurb is that kind of cartoon. Facts of the ocean's radical changes in acidity and oxygen levels form the backbone of the animation; overfishing, dumping, and climate change's heating of ocean currents have already triggered a reversion toward a primordial sea in parts of the ocean larger than the state of Texas. Slurb's surface is inspired by fictions, like J.G. Ballard's prescient 1962 novel Drowned World, in which inhabitants of a flooded world feel the tug of the sun, and dream of a return to their amniotic past.

MAP

|

Sodalitas |
The Walks project is inspired by a dérive or flâneur, both terms loosely refer to a drifting or strolling through an environment to experience the sociological, anthropological, historical and geographical relationships between the individual and their city. The Walks project is at its core an exploration of the city; with a concerted effort to break from routine and experience your environment from a different vantage point and at a slower pace.

Walk #1 – Thursday, April 22nd 10:00 am
The first walk starts at Big Medium, 5305 Bolm Road.

Walk #2 – Wednesday, April 28th 10:00 am
The second walk starts under the Mopac Expressway on Veterans Drive.

Walks exhibition at Big Medium
Opening reception Saturday, May 1st 5:00 – 9:00 pm
This exhibition will display various found objects, paths taken, and other forms of documentation collected by participants from both walks.

SODALITAS (Jana Swec, Joseph Phillips and Shea Little) explores the process of collaboration through a variety of media. Their work deals with issues ranging from their own interpersonal dynamics to globalization and international politics. During Fusebox, SODALITAS will embark on two walks, and they encourage participation from anyone interested in joining them. The group will begin at the same location, but may not necessarily move together, an important aspect of the Walks is for the traveler to take their own path, whether they pursue their own route or walk with others. Each member of the walk is encouraged to document their path with photography, video, audio, mapping and/or collecting objects found along the way. The documentation of these walks will be displayed at the Big Medium gallery.

If you would like to participate in one or both of the walks, please arrive at the proper location at 9:30 am to check in. You should bring any materials or equipment you would like to use to document the walk. Suggested items to bring: sketch pad, camera, video equipment, audio recorder, pencils, pens, zip-lock bags, gloves, snacks, water, and sunscreen. Suggested items to wear: backpack, hat, comfortable walking shoes, and light clothes. For more information visit www.sodalitasart.com

The Walks exhibition, at Big Medium, will also be open on Sunday, May 2nd from 12:00 - 5:00 pm. A Western |
Action Hero |

A Western is a performance for a bar. Within the space we locate our valley, our saloon, our empty street. We find our audience and together we make A Western. The audience cheat at cards, beg our hero to love them and shoot him down. We apply the ketchup blood. We wear the cowboy hats. We want the scene where our Hero walks into a bar and everyone stops talking. We want the scene where the whore begs to be loved. We want the scene where our hero dies in a long and drawn out death.

A Western collides the immediacy and intimacy of live performance with the epic emotional experience of the cinematic blockbuster, a celebration of a failure to capture the true size and majesty of the Wild West. It is an experiment with the relationship between an audience and an event, a re-imagining of everyday landscapes that helps uncover the beauty that already exists in the actual environments we inhabit.

FOR OPTIMAL ENJOYMENT: We encourage you to show up early and have a drink before the show. Blender Love |
Mary Magsamen, Stephan Hillerbrand, & Kirk Lynn |

Blender Love is a modern day séance for cell phones using interactive performance and live cinema.

Dead batteries, dropped calls, and failed relationships will be resurrected, temporarily, so that we can communicate with that other world. Through a series of structured séances, artists Hillerbrand + Magsamen and playwright Kirk Lynn, invite the general public to bring their cell phones into the Fusebox Festival. An intimate carnival tent will house these one on one (on one) performances between a fortune teller and you (and the voice of those who are trying to get through). Together we’ll draw out the spirits of miscommunication and memory, expose the currents of confusions coursing through our lives, and map the mixed messages which have made us what we are. The artists will work collaboratively, combining their experiences with interactive theater (Kirk Lynn) and video installation (Hillerbrand + Magsamen). Blender Love provides a way to interact, entertain and question the values of technology by actively engaging with culture and addressing the issues and concerns of our time. Marshall McLuhan stated that “We become what we behold. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us.”

BLENDER LOVE is an interactive installation that will only take you 5 or ten minutes to enjoy
|

Presented in “best of ” concert form, the elastic temporality of this piece (begun in 2006), has undergone a number of variations depending on the number of artists involved and the arrangement of the stand-alone pieces as an ensemble. Whether the long or the short version, it has attracted audiences at Studio 303, Performance Mix in Soho, Tangente and The Art(prononcez dehors) during the first OFF.T.A event. Constructed like a

Moebius strip, it takes the spetator on a journey between the inside and the outside of the spectacle, or, as Gravel himself suggests, from the head to the heart to the genitals, in whichever order you wish!
We're no longer taking reservations, but last night (Fri) there ended up being plenty of extra seats...so come on out! |

On April 23rd-25th, the gentlemen of RR will be conducting dozens of 10-minute interviews to select a subject for a new work that will be performed at Fusebox Festival 2011. They'll ask you some questions, tell you some secrets, and administer a few simple tests that won't hurt a bit. A handful of finalists will be invited back later in the week for a more rigorous examination, and then one lucky person will be selected to have their pains/pleasures made abstract/immortal.

Please bring:
your oldest article of clothing
a sample from a journal or diary entry
something that smells like you (will not be returned)
a donation to support the development of the show

Appointment times:

April 23: 6pm-10pm
April 24: 11am-7pm
April 25: 11am-7pm

Interviews by appointment: rubberrep@gmail.com
|
