Cloud Eye Control
Cloud Eye Control is a collaborative performance group from Los Angeles comprised of three members: Chi-wang Yang, Miwa Matreyek, and Anna Oxygen. We create original works that uniquely combine interactive media with live performance. Since our inception in 2004 we have created three original works that have been presented both nationally and internationally.
Whether through a re-imagining of Charles Lindbergh's trans-Atlantic flight, the discovery of powerful crystals underground, or one woman's interstellar search for a new home, a common theme in our stories is human adaptation in a technological world. To realize these stories, we project pre-rendered animation and live camera imagery onto various surfaces on the stage, and this imagery functions as scenery and virtual actor. Both high and low tech methods are used to allow the live actor to interact with the media. These methods range from custom-built interactive video software to the physical manipulation of video puppets.
ARTISTIC TEAM:
Miwa Matreyek is an animator/director and multi-media artist who creates animated short films as well as solo and collaborative performance works that integrate animation and live performance using projections. She finds the juxtaposition of animation and body - manipulated time vs. real time, composed space vs. real space - to create a multi-layered visual experience where the real becomes surreal and the fantastical becomes physical . She is a recipient of the 2006 Princess Grace Award for Film. Her solo performance work, Dreaming of Lucid Living won the Student Grand Prix and Audience Choice Award for Best Installation at the Platform International Animation Festival, 2007.
Anna Oxygen is a multi-media artist and musician. She has toured both Europe and the United States, performing dance pop recitals and fantasy-science performance pieces. She also creates mixed media installations that invite participants to interact with sound and space. She has released several albums of electronic music, most recently This is an Exercise on Kill Rock Stars. In addition to her work with Cloud Eye Control she has presented her solo work at P.S. 1, The Seattle Art Museum, Telic Arts Exchange, Machine Project, The Armory Center for the Arts and The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. She received her MFA in Experimental Sound Practices/Integrated Media at The California Institute of the Arts and is a teaching fellow at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. You can purchase her albums at your local music store or online at iTunes or eMusic.com
